I found this in my shed this morning, on the workbench, It wasn't there the other day. I have some thoughts on what it might be, what do you think it is?
It is the small, temporary nest that a queen builds until she can build up a small group to help build the big one. These smaller nests are never "finished." They are abandoned. You will find the full meal deal nearby, though.

Thanks Quilldancer, you've confirmed what I suspected. For my non US visitors we call them wasps.
ReplyDeleteWe also call them wasps here.
ReplyDeleteNow, tell me, how did it end up on your workbench? Judging my the flat bottom, they were building under the eaves somewhere.
I'm guessing this fell off one of the roof supports. I think they are normally much bigger than this.
ReplyDeletetime for the wasp spray!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool. Architecture. ANd a great photo, I might add!
ReplyDeleteIt must be an old one or the inhabitants would still be there and you would know what it is.
